MODESTA BOR 100: Budapest celebrates one of Venezuela’s great composers

In 2026, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Modesta Bor (1926–1998), one of the most important figures in 20th-century Venezuelan music. Composer, musicologist and educator, Bor developed a body of work deeply connected to Venezuelan musical identity and had a lasting influence on musical creation, performance and education across generations.

Her legacy encompasses choral music, concert music and a rich dialogue between Venezuelan musical traditions and academic composition. Through her work, she helped establish Venezuelan music as an important form of artistic, cultural and educational expression.

To mark this centenary, VEHU invites the Venezuelan, the Ibero-American and Hungarian communities to join us for “MODESTA BOR 100”, a special concert taking place on September 26, 2026, at 6:00 PM, at FUGA – Budapest Center of Architecture.

The programme will feature Venezuelan songs and works for cello and piano, performed by Frank Valderrama, János Fejérvári and Attila Jeszenszky-Böhm.

The concert also has a special meaning for our community. Frank Valderrama, a member of VEHU, is the director of Ensamble Catatumbo and the Ibero-American Choir of Budapest, a piano teacher, choral conductor and member of the Budafoki Dohnányi Orchestra. He will be joined by János Fejérvári, distinguished cellist and member of the Kodály Quartet, and Attila Jeszenszky-Böhm, an Argentine-Hungarian pianist, composer and educator who has devoted part of his career to promoting the works of Latin American composers in Hungary.

This concert is also a cultural bridge: the music of one of Venezuela’s great composers comes to Budapest through musicians connected to Hungary and Latin America.
